Well, this is my first post here and I seriously need some advice. I’m getting completely overwhelmed with dress choices. Some background – I have been known to make some really quirky clothing choices and it is something most people expect from me at this point. But, the last few years I have been trying to change up my style, buying clothes that are more classic and elegant and just having fun with my accessories. So, there are two sides to my personality currently at war with eachother – elegant vs quirky and fun. To add to the confusion, we recently decided to really downsize our wedding – we’re having an intimate (10 people or so) destination wedding outside in key west. I was totally set on just getting a simple lace fit & flare dress and jazzing it up with some fun accessories. Well this weekend sort of put a spin on things – my younger brother wants to do video Save the Dates and Invites for us as a present and to help him have more examples of his work (he is a wedding videographer). We brainstormed together to come up with a fun idea for us and we now have a willy wonka themed wedding lol! So, I’m back to square one with my dress dilemna. Do I stay with the simple and elegant lace dress – or do I look for a fun pink mermaid/trumpet style that would be a little more fitting to our theme? Any advice would be great.

@alip0p: Have you tried any on yet? Sometimes what you think you want isn’t always what you really want, you know? plus, you’ll want to be comfortable as well, so maybe what you’re envisioning as fun and quirky could be also not fun for you. Also, your dress doesn’t have to match your theme, but generally if your theme speaks to who you are as a couple, then your dress will most likely match as well. Have you asked your mom what she wants to see you in? Sometimes that helps to give you somewhere to start when trying them on, and then you can decide if you like the style or not and go from there. A good consultant at a well-stocked salon should be able to go off of your likes and dislikes and find you the perfect dress. You still have a LOT of time before you need to place the order, so you can go have fun with trying them and get a feel for what works best on your body and in your heart.
I know that’s probably not the answer you’re looking for, but really it’s what helped me- and my dress doesn’t match my venue or anything at all, but I feel like it’s totally me and I feel like a million bucks in it, and I know it’s going to put a smile on FI’s face, and that’s what sold me on it 🙂

@alip0p: Hi there.. I just joined myself..I’ve worked in Key West tons and love the feel of the place and all the yummy food…I’m in a similar situation and need help with dresses, I really like this one from alfred angelo and think it would be great for a beach wedding: http://www.alfredangelo.com/collections/styles/1774NT
the high/lo hemline is non traditional and kinda quirky 🙂
But now I’m at a loss with the willy wonka theme :/
Best of luck with your search!

I had decided on a theme and look then went dress shopping. What looks good on me made me totally change my theme. I now say dress shop first! Try on something of every type of style and see what moves you. I love a dress I absolutely hated on the hanger. Like fingers down the throat hated LOL.

Thanks everyone for the advice – Just some background info to answer some of the questions above My mom passed away 12 yrs ago, so she isn’t around to help and that is part of the problem. She always enjoyed seeing what I would wear, so I’m really missing her now. Basically I have my maid of honor and my fiance to talk with and although they both try to be helpful, neither one really understands my style – and I think they just don’t have the stamina to look at dresses like I do :). I have been dress shopping twice now – I hate destination, flowy dresses. They look awful on me. Also hated aline dresses, I felt like a big triangle. I’m really curvy and mermaid/trumpet style dresses looked amazing on me. I just couldn’t find anything that looked good and suited my style. I also discovered I adore big tulle ballgowns 🙂 – they just felt so fun. However, they don’t adore me. They make me look short and squat for some reason, I’m not sure why, not to mention I really want to show off my curves – I lost a lot of weight last year and I love the way I look now. Also, I think even I can’t pull off a giant tulle ballgown on a beach lol. Oh, and the willy wonka theme – really its all centered around that one song, world of pure imagination. My fiance and I both love that song for different reasons and we want to use it as inspiration to have a fun, whimsical magical wedding – no oompa loompas or anything. But thanks again for your advice – it has really helped me to sort of narrow down what I should look at.
