Need advice regarding illusion back

The back can absolutely be filled in with applique, but it could get costly. Applique is one of the most time intensive (and beautiful!) techniques in sewing because it has to be hand-placed and sewn, unless the way the fabric that comes in already has the applique “laid out” in a way that looks good on the back. Often applique comes from heavily-embroidered fabric and the seamstress cuts out the individual flowers.

I’d imagine sleeves are do-able, though usually the easiest way to add them is to get a strapless dress and buy/have made a jacket/bolero. They might look a little odd with the straps.

Yup, it can definitely be done! If it weren’t on the back, it’s even the kind of think you could DIY if you were very comfortable with sewing. $500 of extra fabric?! How much did you order? That fabric really shouldn’t be more than $60/yard
