So I was married a year ago in Ireland. I live in canada so I picked most of my vendors online because my wedding was in Ireland. I decided late that I wanted a videographer and found one who’s style I liked and booked him online. I paid a €200 deposit and signed a contract via email. Never spoke to this guy only thru email and the only time I met him was the wedding day. We paid in full on our wedding, sept 22 in cash plus gave an extra €100 to stay an hour later and capture our first dance.
On his website he said average turn around is 6-8 months from receiving payment and any final details. I sent him the list of songs I wanted used towards the end of last October. So April of this year rolls around and I sent him an email saying it’s been six months, just looking for an update. He got very pissy with me saying the contract doesn’t guarentee 6 months etc. I wrote back and said sorry if my email came off differently than intended, I’m just anxious to see your amazing work. His next reply was he had some staff quit so he was a bit behind, should be a few more months. Fine. I waited and emailed again. Then it was his wife and him were expecting their first child any day now so he was behind. Okay fine. So my husband has been asking me what’s going on with the video. Like we paid €2000 and have nothing to show for it. I said I would deal with it. My husband was getting more impatient than me and asked for the videographer’s email so now he’s been contacting him. Around the end of November my husband asked will we have the video for Christmas we want to be able to show our family. Videographer said yes you will have the DVD’s and it will be viewable online very soon, probably before Christmas. We still haven’t gotten anything. So my husband emailed again last week and we got a response today. Now the excuse is he had a hard drive crash and has been working to recover some files that weren’t backed up so we won’t have the dvd’s by Christmas. But the wedding feature will be availed online by Christmas and we can download it to usb and show our family.
Im at a loss as to what to do! He has our money and it seems that there’s always an excuse. I almost don’t even care about the video anymore. It’s been over a year I’m kinda over my wedding now. I really wanted to be able to watch the video for our first anniversary. a huge reason I decided to get a video was because most of my family didnt attend the wedding, even my grandparents. So I wanted to be able to show them. My husband grandparents were in thier 90’s at the time and couldn’t attend either. I was so happy my Mother-In-Law would be able to show them the video, but unfortunately my husband’s grandfather passed away recently so he never got to see it.
I’ve spoken to 2 people today who think something’s gone wrong and I won’t get a video at all. What legal rights do I have considering I paid in full for a service? Like how legally bounding is a contract that pretty much says you’ll get your video when we say you’ll get it. My BIL is going to try stopping by the videographers office this week to see what’s up. Should we be contacting a lawyer? Or is that extreme considering the time that has passed?
