The first looks correct to me, but I can’t tell you why. It just does for some reason.

Take a look at some samples- maybe on Crane.com or Martha Stewart?  They seem to really have the etiquette down pat 🙂

I don’t think it’s a grammatic issue as much as an aesthetic thing.  I did no caps on the non-proper nouns even when they started a line.

One other non-related thing, but you may see that there’s a debate around how the year 2010 should be written out.  I went with “two thousand ten”, but there’s argument for “two thousand and ten” as well as “twenty ten” (because nobody ever said nineteen and ninety nine, or “one thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine”)

Personally I think do it how you like.  As for the year, I think it’s all a matter of personal preference because I see professionals on the big websites and even Martha Stewart featured invites that have both ways….go with what you like.

Have you considered using small caps for everything? Then if you only capitalize the proper nouns, the lowercase letters won’t look out of place.  I’ve seen a lot of invitations that use the small caps and I think it looks very nice!

I would capitalize all of proper nouns!

    For example:

    Tuesday, the Twelfth of October

    Two Thousand and Ten

    Four O’clock in the Afternoon

I like this look better as well as I believe Twenty Ten is the proper way to write out the year!
