Not sure if this will help but I got mine done in South Bend, IN and they did a great job. I had a 5 point bustle and hemmed and the cost was $120. They knew the dress was going on a 7 hr drive (got married in southern IN) and packaged it so I didn’t have any wrinkles when I finally got to wear it.

I had alterations done at the DB in Ann Arbor. I went there because, like you, I was really nervous and wanted them to do it since it was “their” dress. So, I ended up paying about $300 for a hem (they had to remove lace on the bottom,) 1-point bustle, and taking out the sides/back in 2 places, and adding cups. It was expensive, but to me, it was worth it. (I was particularly worried b/c I knew that I needed a couple more inches cuz it wouldn’t zip up in back, and there was some beading that they would have to do, and I wanted to make sure the seamstress could match the beading.) If it hadn’t been so comlicated, then I *definitely* would have gone elsewhere. But at DB you can also just go in, and have them look at you in the dress, and one of the seamstresses has a price sheet and should be able to tell you exactly how much everything will be. So, overall, I was very happy with the end result. (They did exactly what I needed, for exactly how much money they said it would be. And the alterations lady was even VERY patient with me when I couldnt decide what kind of bustle to do!) This was all last summer.

I’ve had or know people who have had pretty bad experience at Davids Bridal and the big bridal shops in the area, unfortunately – my dress was from Belladonnas in Wyandotte, but after my experience with their alterations on my prom dress I didn’t really want to go back there to get my dress hemmed and bustled. I know girls here aren’t big fans of the knot, but if you go to their local boards for Detroit the girls on there are SO helpful and give super detailed reviews for all their vendors, I’d look there. My seamstress lives in Toledo and basically all the Toledo knotties have used her, she works out of her home but is great – my alterations were super detailed, she actually had to remove and then reapply lace to my dress to hem it! Let me know if you want her info, but I’m sure you can find someone closer to your area on the Detroit knot boards.

My friend had her dress altered at the one in dearborn, I’m not sure what all had to be done or how much it was, but she was pleased.

@SoConfused:  the original store should have ordered you a smaller dress to begin with. Don’t freak out yet–their orders usually come in 2-3 weeks. They get it from the warehouse or another store. They always say longer to cover themselves. Just inspect it very carefully when you go to pick it up. If alterations end up being just a hem and a bustle, they can do it in a couple days. It looks complicated to us but they do it all day, every day

BTW–beautiful dress!
