Are you just looking for regular royal icing, that is white and hardens for decoration? If so, its easy:

1 cup meringue powder (mixed with 1/2 cup water)

– whisk/beat well in a bowl until fluffy and no longer clear.

Add 4 cups icing sugar, combine completely. Add more icing sugar or water to get desired consistency.

I made gingerbread cookies a few weeks ago as gifts and I couldn’t find meringue powder or powdered egg white to save my life, and the only other option for royal icing is raw egg white, which I wasn’t about to hand out as a gift. So I used this recipe:

  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 5 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • food coloring

It’s for sugar cookies, but I put it in a plastic bag, cut the tip of the corner off, and piped the outline and little faces on each of them. I let them dry overnight, and they were super cute and stayed intact after being placed in separate bags.
