    It really depends on what sort of decoration you like. There’s some bees who did gorgeous icing rosettes on their cakes and piped ganache with cachous on cupcakes are really pretty. Fondant however is a lot smoother and can go either way depending. It could look really classic and elegant, or you can jazz it up with pretty colours.

    You can also mix frosting type but stick to the same colour palette. All up to you! What do you like working with? 🙂

    ETA: Buttercream/ganache and fondant cupcakes?

    Hahaha definitely agree! The quotes we got were $300 for a basic 2 tier but with decorations could go up to $700.

    I guess it’s really a matter of which you like. All the options you listed can make very elegant cakes. Some factors you should consider would be, what’s the weather going to be like at your reception site. How much storage space you have. For example, if you’re decorating with fresh fruit, you might want to leave that to the end since it will discolour unless you brush them with some lemon juice or sugar glaze.

    And of course, a matter of your tastes 🙂 which do you like eating the best?

    I am voting for other!

    I really like butter cream on cupcakes. I really don’t like any type of icing and so I’m not having a big cake. I have found a really funky cake style make of biscuits/cookies. I would definitely have cupcakes!

    If you haven’t done much cake decorating before I’d suggest having a go at a few styles before making a decision. There are tons of videos on YouTube etc. and you can find what best suits you!

    I voted for icing on both, just because most people don’t like the taste of fondant. Although you could do marshmallow fondant. I’m a pastry chef, and I have to say if you do decide to go with fondant, you need to practice before you attempt to cover a whole cake with it, depending on how big you want it, ’cause it could get messy. Icing on the other hand is easier to work with and more forgiving, you could even do a non smooth look, and if you want to kick it up a notch you could make some sugar paste flowers, you could even make them time ahead. There are many that are super easy, and like the above msg said there are tons of videos you can watch to learn some basic techniques on flower making. I’m a firm believer of practice makes better so go ahead and have some fun at flower making, it can make a simple cake look very expensive. 

    And on the cupcakes you could have a color icing contrasting your cake for more impact or a monocromatic look and contrasting decoration on the cupcakes. :-))
