I know it’s hard to deal with Future Mother-In-Law issues, but I honestly would have kept the surprise cake a secret and just had them all.  Since that’s no longer possible, I think it would be a lot less stressful to just let it happen and still have his cake.

Of all the battles you could possibly have with this woman whose family you are joining, “too much dessert” just doesn’t seem like one worth fighting.

I agree with the other posters. Worse comes to worse, you’ll have some extra desserts at the end of the night. That would have happened anyway, some people just don’t like cake. Too much dessert is not that big of a deal, I doubt your Future Mother-In-Law was meaning to get in the way, she probably just wanted to make sure there was enough food & choices for everyone.

I wouldn’t fight this one. I agree with the others, too much dessert isn’t the worse thing in the world. And it’s definetly better than an unhappy mil! I’m sure somebody will be happy to take home some left overs at the end of the night, I know I’m always happy to be that person!
