I’m down to two venues each one is quite different and I love them for different reasons. Both are about the same costs.
I will be having a cocktail style wedding reception.
Venue #1 the planetarium
this is a unque venue which will allow us to get married under the stars and then have the reception in the large lobby. Dancing will then be held in the round planetarium.
Pros: cool location, dance floor would be awesom, single story, great lighting opportunities in both the planetarium and the lobby, smokers on the steps. easy access.
negatives: I don’t like that the room for the tables and dance floor are seperate because then those who don’t dance will not be able to see the dancing. How would people see the first dance? There is NO natural light.
Venue #2 The museum
Also a unique venue. There are two large rooms that can be decorated anyway I want. Both rooms have huge windows. People can walk through the museum.
Pros: the windows, very personalized, great size for dance floor and tables.
Cons: No smoking on the property (guest would need to go down 4 floors and stand on the side walk) no candles, long walk to the ceremony and reception. Ugly celings which would need to be covered. I will need to rent lighting because the lighting is drop down flurecent.

Planetarium all day long. No contest.

I personally would go for the plentarium, but that’s because I find it so much cooler!
It sounds like the museum would have some additional costs (lighting, ceiling decorations). Does that factor into your decision at all?

The planetarium sounds awesome. Could you add some chairs around the dance floor for non-dancers to watch?

The museum is slightly cheaper so with the lighting and ceiling covering it would come out about the same.
I guess my biggest issue with the museum is the 4th floor for smokers (many of Fiance family smoke and I’m afraid they will get sick of the hike)
Biggest issue with the planetarium is the seperateness of the dance floor and the tables although I think its really cool too…

The planetarium sounds SO cool!

The planetarium sounds cool, but the separate dancing area would be an automatic turn off for me. I think the other venue is fine, decoration sounds like it would make it nice and I honestly wouldn’t worry one bit about the smokers. It would actually be good for them to either quit for the night, or take the extra hike.

@Regina Phalange: adding chairs would be an option. I also thought about adding a few cocktail tables… just not sure if that would cut out all the entertainment for the non dancers…who at least get to watch the dancers at most weddings…

I reserved the planetarium today! I went back yesterday afternoon with Fiance and we worked out all (most of) the bugs. The dome area is large enough to hold chairs and cocktail tables in addition to the dancing. There are two large doors that will stay open throughout the reception and…well… its just really COOL. Thanks for your help.
