With the wedding and starting grad school/clinicals last month, our guest room is just a massive mess. It doesn’t help we’re totally re-doing the whole kitchen so a bunch of that stuff is in there too! But the kitchen will be done in a couple weeks, the same time as my 3 week break from classes so I want to fix it! It was my office but I moved my desk into a corner of our large living room and I really like it there so I can be working with Darling Husband still in the room, etc. So now what to do with this big empty room? It’s just slightly smaller than our room, not sure exact sq. feet but it’s decent sized. I do a lot of scrapbooking so I might put a table in there for that. We are hoping to TTC in the next year so I don’t want to spend a ton of money on it, maybe somehow put furniture in there that can be a dresser or changing table later on. Darling Husband wants to put a futon in there, but I’m not sure since idk when it would be used and we’d have to take it out soon anyway. So show me your spare rooms and what to do with it!

We had a spare room in our last apartment and it was always a mess. We lived in a furnished college apartment, and while we were able to have them remove the furniture from our bedroom, kitchen, and some from living room, they had limited storage and couldn’t take everything. We were stuck with the bed and a massive bulky desk in a super tiny room. We had pathetic storage space – only 2 very small closets, so we had boxes of our belongings everywhere.
I was so excited to move to an unfurnished place and have an opportunity to actually turn the spare into something functional. We have a lot of closets and storage space here, so no boxes of our crap piled in this spare! We use it as an office space for both of us. I also have a space for me to get ready since the room has ample natural light for applying make-up. It’s a small room, but we actually have more space in here than we ever did in our old spare. Darling Husband has his desk and belongings against the other wall that can’t be seen in the picture. We won’t be TTC for another 2 years, but if we have a baby while still living here, we didn’t spend hardly anything on decorating the room and some items could be used in the nursery anyway.

dayl20: That’s really cute! I like the vanity set, that’s a good idea. I have way too much jewlery in our room anyway. We actually have that same rug in our living room! Love the colors as well, thanks!

Both of our spare rooms are guest bedrooms. It worked out nicely, because Darling Husband just put his old stuff in one room and I took over the other. We bought a king sized bed for our room, so we had to put our old beds somewhere! I love having 2 guest bedrooms because when our family comes to stay that means my brother and his Girlfriend get a room and my mom gets a room. We’ve also hosted both of our moms during a weekend, and they love having their own separate rooms.
Here’s the before and after for one of the bedrooms, the other is practically the same, only different window placement and different bedding/curtain colors.

MrsN14: If you are planning on TTC, double duty furniture is the answer.
A cabinet bed will give you a surface or a change table, a sofa for those days/nights when you need to sit with baby, and a guest bed.

FutureDrAtkins: Cute, I like the purple! Guest bedrooms definitely make sense if you have guests over. We bought this house during college so didn’t have much stuff to begin with. Our parents and siblings all live within 10 miles and we’ve never had a guest stay over since we’ve been here! I’m sure if we move anywhere we would definitely need some guest bedrooms for family.
julies1949: I’ve never seen anything like that! What a neat idea, I’ll have to look into that!

MrsN14: Oh yeah, no point of that! Put a second desk in there for crafts! Or what about a folding table/card table? That way, you can collapse it when it’s not in use and store it away, but when you want to work on something it’s easy to set up again.
The container store online has a lot of really cute ideas for organization too. I really want one of those bench style seating things that has storage bins in the bottom! Those are at Target!
