I am seriously drawing blanks on my mom’s upcoming b’day gift.
My budget is $200 or under. I have two days to shop (not a lot of time). Need to find something and can’t figure anything out.
Do you remember what you last gave your mom for her b’day? I’m hoping to draw inspriation for your gift giving!
My mom is practical vs. experience (so, no tickets to anything, massages, etc.). She’s also horrible at using gift cards (she’ll usually buy something for someone else). My mom’s also older if that matters (she’ll be 79). I usually gift her things she needs (she rarely buys anything for herseslf). Usually it’s clothes, or stuff for the house, or jewelry, etc.
ALL I can think of right now is to get her a gift certificate for a salon to get a nice haircut (something she wouldn’t do for herself) – but I feel like she prefers tangible gifts and something more useful…. but, again – totally drawing blanks.
She’s retired, but doesn’t really have any hobbies. She loves playing games – (I already got her some crossword and puzzle books). She gardens, but has everything under the sun for that.
I guess I could shop for some clothes or jewelry, but with the time I have, it would be a small miracle if I could find something…. so I’m looking for a backup plan.

My last birthday gift from my daughters was a Coach bag…would she like something like that?

Does she have friends over often? I don’t know if she’d like something like a Mahjongg set or a nice cribbage board, but I know that would be a hit in my family.

@ItWasntMe: excellent idea, but unfortunately – no. She has a couple brand new purses that just sit and don’t get used. I think she wants to make them last as long as possible – by not using them… aye.
@linguo42: no, she doesn’t have people over often. but, thanks for the game ideas!! 🙂

My Mom and I do a “date night” for her birthday. She picks where she wants to go and I pay for it. Last year we went to the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Tour, this year we saw West Side Story. She prefers those gifts from me instead of me just giving her tickets to something because we get to enjoy it together.

I *just* posted this in another gift thread, but it might actually work for you!
I arranged for a maid service to clean my mom’s house for Mother’s Day, and she LOVED it! She thought it was the most thoughtful/helpfuk gift, and wouldn’t mind receiving it again. Haha
I think it took two maids about 2 hours or less, and it cost less than $200.
If she’s 79, maybe she would like something like that to help, if she’s not as efficient at cleaning as she used to be?

I just bought my mom a Pandora bracelet. She seemed to like it and you can add charms on it for different occasions

if you live near a big craft store like michaels something you could totally do is a calender creator kit. its pretty cheap (like $40) and it gives you bassically a blank calander template so you can customize it for any year and it gives stickers and whatnot and basically its like a calender scrapbook. also the decorative pages tear out so at the end of the year there is a premade scrapbook. all you need is pictures! its great if you ahve kids yourself or have pictures of you and her together. my Future Mother-In-Law got one of these for me filled with pictures of my son for my birthday and i totally cried i loved it so much! and its also VERY useful and practical. you can even go so far as to write in special dates and stuff like that for her. i know mine has birthdays written in as well as things like mother days, father day, st patties day things like that.
