@spoonoutmyheart: If you’re keeping things under $200 and like slim-fitting looks, then you should definitely consider H&M. While the fabric and construction of H&M suits and jackets don’t seem on par with, say, Banana’s or Jcrew’s, I honestly don’t think an Express suit is miles away better—especially if the H&M suit fits better off the rack on your studly groomsmen.  Express uses a spandex in a lot of their wool suits/pants to make them stretchy. It’s fine, but doesn’t make them much more durable than H&M suits. As long as we’re comparing, I’ve read that H&M suits are the same, if not better, constructed than Zara’s suits. If I found an H&M suit on the cheap that fit beautifully I wouldn’t hesitate to get it. It’s more slim-fitting and would probably require a lot less tailoring than an Express suit would. (Express really isn’t that slim. I have one of their suits and need to have it tailored.) It’s also probably cheaper. For the record: I’ve worn an H&M black velvet jacket to an occasional party here and there for years. I’m donating it before it’s had the chance to fall apart. So good on H&M.

Ah… the Banana Republic Outlet may be worth the trip. The most recent Banana Republic jackets have been exceptionally slim-fitting. I bought a couple from BR this fall and a blazer from JCrew. I had to have the Jcrew jacket taken in on the sides quite a bit, but the BR sportcoats fit like a dream. No tailoring required at all—and I like my jackets with a lot of tapering at the waist. I’m a 38S at both companies, but the BR blazers were a much better fit. Last year, the BR suits weren’t this slim-fitting (in my experience).

And I see no problem with the groom being in a different suit. If you find a nice one at BR for him and cheap ones at H&M that fit the vibe you’re going for… sounds like a good plan to me. I wore a different tuxedo than my groomsmen. They got rentals and I got to spend extra scratch on my own tux—piecing together everything over time. Stalking sales. That sort of thing.

Good luck shopping!

@inamani: I didn’t mean anything by that comment. Just that we obviously share the same excellent taste!

@spoonoutmyheart: I just looked at the link in your first post.  That guy looks great.  He’s wearing an Express suit from a year or two ago. I believe their current suits actually have thinner lapels, making them even more wearable with skinnier ties and collars. H&M should have styles you’re looking for too.  They usually are kinda limited on color and sometimes. Looks like they have this one in grey (below is “Dark Blue” I think). Might be darker than you’re looking for. Never know what you’ll find at the store in the States. But they have a wasitcoat that goes with it too if you want a 3-piecer.  So definitely worth checking out in-store:

Overstock has some pretty cheap ones. Not sure if the sizes would work for your guys since they’re tall, but you could always order one as a test and send it back if it doesn’t work.

Are vests a must? They’re a nice touch, but they’re tough to find outside formals. As I learned at an independent men’s clothing store, the reason why they’re so associated with formalwear is because most people’s experience with formals is rentals. The vest’s primary function is to cover the rental pants’ waistband loops and the bottom of the rental tie, which often comes up short.

My groom is wearing a tux with a long tie – he’s buying it – and he won’t be wearing a vest. He will be wearing braces (suspenders).

The groomsmen will be purchasing charcoal gray suits at the aforementioned men’s store. Our original vision included vests, but now, we won’t be doing them – vests weren’t available. We may get the guys in suspenders.
