OK I’m not sure if this is true, as I don’t have any personal experience with it, but I’ve heard that it takes 2 weeks for your body to become accomodated to any taste. So if you didn’t like brussel sprouts, but you ate them everyday for 2 weeks, your body would become used to the taste and you might actually crave them. I would think the same could be true for water. If only it worked the reverse way for cravings…like if you went two weeks without, you’d no longer like the taste…now that’s definitely not true haha.

I think you should try to maybe start with an every other day thing to begin with. Then gradually get to the point where you no longer “need” it. I stopped cold turkey for a while but I just felt so bitter when I’d see a delicious cold soda and I couldn’t have any. Instead of completely cutting myself off, I decided that during the week, water was all I could drink, but on the weekend I could have some sweet tea. That worked a little better for me…but eventually I gave up. Good luck breaking the coke addiction!

PS. I’m about to go through this (again) too…stupid new years resolutions ๐Ÿ˜‰

high fructose corn syrup  (now corn sugar) is said to be ‘plant based’ but is one of the most horrible things you can digest. I feel it was irresponsible for a nutritionist to even suggest Diet Coke and water are interchangeable. The food colorings and flavorings are chemicals = not good for you.

As a side note a few people I know have had success switching from the regular soda family to the ‘throwback’ sodas or sugar based sodas, they later weaned off of these with teas.

Good Luck!

I’m not sure if anyone else mentioned it (didn’t read every response), but you can do natural fruit juice (or concentrated) and add sparkling water to it.  Good luck, you’re doing the right thing, soda (Coca-Cola and other ones) have so many bad chemicals in it.  Organic soda is good too, at Whole Foods.

I gave myself yesterday to savor my last sodas, but as of today I am cold turkey! I am going to the store to buy fizzy water right now!

@Menobride- I don’t know where your nutritionist went to school, but my doctors and nutritionist think that Aspertame is the worst thing you could put in your body that isn’t illegal, basically. I suffered from severe migraines for 6+ years, quit drinking Diet Coke (or any diet soda) at the recommendation of a Bio professor, and my migraines were gone forever within a week. I haven’t had one now in over two years.

Describing Aspartame as “plant-based” and thus okay is like describing Nicotine as plant-based and thus harmless. Numerous studies have connected aspartame with increases in a number of medical conditions, including severe headaches and migraines, especially in women. Not to mention the fact that it makes you crave sugar and carbs.

Ugh, off my aspartame soapbox for now. That stuff is evil, and the amount I suffered for years because of it just makes me so upset.

I did awesome at cutting out Moutain Dew UNTIL my office decided to install a large pop cooler with ALL the FREE 24 oz bottles of pop that we want. Its awful. I try to walk the extra few feet to the front of the office to the water cooler, but the pop cooler is RIGHT outside of my cubical. So tempting. Needless to say I have been drinking more pop then I have in a while. So I can’t quite offer a suggestion. I drank water because I would have had to pay for the pop, but not its free and it makes me insane. ๐Ÿ™‚

@ILikePink: AMEN on Aspartame.  The food/drink world has just gotten worse and worse over the years.  Everything was so much better 30+ years ago, not perfect, but much better.  All of this new bad stuff was now invented and APPROVED.  Health problems are soaring.

Hmm, I didn’t think aspartame was plant-based or good for you.  There have been studies about it.

If they used stevia in diet coke it would be awesome.  Stevia IS plant-based ๐Ÿ™‚

I did that about 5 years ago.  I just recently about a year ago started drinking soda again.  I went cold turkey and it worked for me.  I didn’t crave it or anything.  Latley I have been but I still stick to water. I will add those fruit punch flavors from Walmart or the propell flavoring to add a kick.  I drink a lot of sweet tea which I’m trying to stop drinking so much of as well.  I don’t do lemons anymore in water b/c there is sodium in them.

You can do it…just try it.  Drink water w/a straw you can get more down and you won’t knowtice it as much! LOL

Aspertaine is bad for you.  I’m surprised someone says its good for you as it’s not.  I stay away from that as much as possible.

Look into a soda stream. I have one and they are great. Its a great money savor and fun. you can order their flavored oils or use your own splashes of juice.

I am SO addicted to coke as well… I drink Caffeine Free and Sprite – and now I am on a sweet tea kick too! I just can’t stomach plain water – ick!!! I quit cold turkey about 3 months before my wedding and I was amazed at how much better I felt and the weight I lost!!! If only I could do that again ๐Ÿ™

I also LOVE coke. And am not a fan of water. Just force yourself to drink water with every meal and let your coke be a treat/snack. Trick yourself like that first, then maybe start drinking caffeine free coke. I think eventually you’ll get used to drinking less if not quit entirely. oh and definitely avoid anything diet..including splenda and all of those ‘natural’ sweeteners. They are just chemicals!
