Wow, that’s an ugly website! That’s a really big turnoff for me. If you don’t have an editing/artistic enough eye to have a beautiful website layout, how badly are you going to mangle my album layouts/photo composition? Their white balance is a little wonky. Photos aren’t as sharp as they could be. There are a few awkward lighting situations. Overall, I give them a “meh”. Ok, kind of standard average photography. If I were on a budget, i’d still allow enough money for a better photographer – a good one can make even the most budget wedding look expensive. Remember Miss Sand Dollar mentioning all the things that went wrong with her wedding, and saying that her photographer mastered all of it, and made the event look so much more luxe? That’s what your friend needs.

The thing I noticed is that the pictures aren’t lit well.

Pictures look like they aren’t lit well, some positions are awkward, and the photos are not memorable or breathtaking. If you go for a photographer of that quality, you might as well take pictures yourself. Invest into someone with more experience and talent, it’s worth your special day.

I will also add, that there should be TONS of photographers around Richmond that would offer a good pacakge for a low price.  Definitely keep looking.

I also had an overall budget budget 🙂 (I prefer that over low budget.. sounds like a sad, poorly done movie to me).  I made a decision based on that alone had to go back and start over.. and that meant contacting about 20 different people, getting only a few responses back, and then negotiating a little bit.  What she may not know is photographers travel!  Please get her to spend a few weeks looking through every possible option in her area, contacting some people and getting dialogues started, asking to see galleries, reading the photographers’ blogs, etc.  Once she knows what jumps out at her, start narrowing it down to who you click with and who offers you the best deal. No matter what your budget is, try to find the best option for it.  I wish I had done that to begin with!  You want the pics to look professional or what’s the point of paying any amount? Many people here will tell you to up your budget, but sometimes that’s just not possible.  If you can’t spend more, that is OKAY.  Just please find the best photographer at YOUR price point.   It can be done!!!

@wanderer – AGREED!

CONS:

  • dated website (if this is a testament to their tech-savvyness, AKA ability to retouch photos, this is a BAD sign)
  • Lacking clarity in photos – looks like pictures from my point and shoot camera
  • Lighting – does not know how to adjust post-production (see first bullet)
  • Composition – the look of the “posed” pictures are really generic and she may not have a great sense of styling and direction

I think she should pass

I didn’t think the pictures were that bad… not good either but if you don’t think photography is that important to you (I don’t know who feels that way) then they are not that bad.

I agree with the website and everything about the website… but I would like to add that the price is not that cheap.  My photographer is doing 7 hours 2 photographers and all the prints on disc for well under the middle package price.

@Treasure43: Good photographers don’t need to do discounts to get jobs. Bad/desperate ones do.

@wanderer: Huh? I negotiated with my photographers and did get a discount from all the ones I’m meeting and I think they have really great portfolios. Okay, maybe more than 6X what he’s charging but a discount is a discount.
