Ok bees, I need some help getting started with ceremony music. Our church is Lutheran and all the music has to be Christian. The wedding coordinator gave us a list of suggestions, but I’m curious about more choices.
Since I’m just starting with music, let me make sure I have this right… We need the following:
- prelude to play while guests are arriving and being seated
- processional when bridesmaids walk in
- song for when I walk in
- song played during unity candle/sand, we may opt for a reading instead as a three-minute song is sometimes a little awkward in the middle of the ceremony
- recessional when we all walk out
Any help would be much appreciated!

I love Amazing Grace and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing by Sufjan Stevens (Youtube them!) and All Creatures of Our God & King by Patty Griffin. They’re all hymns sung by secular artists, and I love their different takes on them. I also love It Is Well With My Soul and Be Thou My Vision 🙂

I really am considering having a soloist sing ‘You Are Everything’ by Matthew West. Maybe that would be a nice unity candle/sand song.
My walk-in and and recessional are going to be ‘Hold Us Together’ by Matt Maher…the beginning of the song for my entrance, and then the really joyous ‘first day of the rest of your life’ refrain for our exit 🙂

“When I say I do” by Matthew West is a good unity song- he put out a couple recently that work well for weddings
Simple Gifts/Fanfare for the Common Man is nice because while being based on a Hymn (reminds me very much of parts of Proverbs) it has nice dynamics to be of musical interest. We’re using that for the processional of everyone- maybe even the Blast! version with the lyrics
Look at Classic hymns, get a hymnbook from your church or a local thrift store (ours always seem to have a hymnal from an older church) and go through and see what ones you like. Chris Rice’s Living Room Sessions has some nice piano arrangments of some of the great classic hymns (All Creatures of Our God and King, For the Beauty of the Earth, etc)
Remember you can- if you want- have the whole group sing a hymn/worship song during the ceremony. We are having two, a traditional hymn and then a contemporary one.
