I think you’re doing the right thing by gifting it to her!! It takes a bigger person to be able to do that, so good for you!

cherryfox22 :  no harm in nicely asking for it back at this point. In the future though it is a good lesson to not lend money if you ever want to see it again. I have heard people on here call it a stupid tax but I think its better thought of as a lesson tax. This has taught you a good lesson, and maybe the money was worth the lesson in the long run. Sorry this happened bee.

cherryfox22 :  As a rule, it is not a good idea for you to loan money to the clients you work with. Even if you had a personal conversation, this is not a personal friend of yours. If the capacity of your organization is to assist homeless and low income families, I think you will need to learn to draw boundaries. I am surprised that your agency doesn’t have rules against this. It is pretty standard that workers, even volunteers, should not get too personally involved with service users. If this is not a violation of the rules at your organization, perhaps your agency can pay you the $200 back?

I also don’t think it is likely that this homeless or low income woman necessarily has the money to pay you back. First, her being a client of your organization which is for homeless and low income families, already indicates a level of poverty. Second, you said that at the time you lent her the money she was barely scraping by. Where do you expect her to get the money? What made you think she would have an extra $200 when you gave your money to her?

If you are not strapped for the cash, I would take it as a lesson learned. You did an act of kindness for someone in need. The end.

EDITED TO ADD: I just saw a pp comment that this thread is two years old. I didn’t know that when I responded. Hopefully the new comments help whomever brought this thread back to the first page.
