We are from Chicago but wanting to get married outside overlooking the cliffs of Northern CA (just south of SF). My dream would be the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay, (but I’d rather spend that money on the honeymoon). I have scoured the internet for all hotels and venues but need any more ideas- I haven’t fallen in love with a place yet and am working on a tight budget. We are flying out in a few weeks to look at venues and want to be sure I have all options possible. Any great ideas of amazing planners, or venues that aren’t super popular? Any budget ideas? Estate or rental houses? Ideally we’d get married and have reception in the same place, think champagne and oysters outside… anyone worked with Sams, or Oceano? We would go as far as south as Big Sur, but closer for people to fly into SF the better. thanks!

We got married at The Mountain Terrace in Woodside, CA (late September last year). It’s up in the hills about 30-45 minutes south of SF. It’s more woodsy, but there is a bay view and it’s beautiful. You can have your ceremony outdoors and then your reception either outdoors or indoors. The place has an intimate feel to it, even though they can accommodate quite a few people outside. We thought it was relatively affordable compared to similar venues, but we had our wedding on a Sunday, which helped. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Rain is unlikely, but we often get a heat wave in late September. It was 95 degrees the day of our wedding, but it actually cools down a lot when the sun goes down, so I don’t think it was a big problem. If you’re right on the ocean near SF, fog and chilly weather can be an issue, if you’re planning to have the ceremony or reception outside. The other thing to keep in mind is that there aren’t too many hotels close by. So your guests could stay in Half Moon Bay or somewhere along the peninsula. It will probably be about a 30 minute drive from wherever they are to the venue.
If you want cliffs and ocean, there are some venues in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area, in which case you can have your guests either fly into San Jose or Monterey.
Incidentally, our families are from Chicago too 🙂 Good luck with your search.

@almo: thanks for the venue idea, it looks beautiful- and would certainly be more affordable. Maybe we can swing by there and check it out in person.

Not really sure of your budget or number of guests, but have you looked at the following:
–Sam’s Chowder House
–Pasatiempo Golf Course Santa Cruz
–Shadowbrook in Capitola—they have great food too!
–I love Mezza Luna for a rehearsal dinner. They also have banquet rooms for a reception.
–Miramar Restaurant does wedding receptions
–San Benito House
–It’s Italia—Great food for a rehearsal dinner or you can buy out the restaurant for an event. It is right below the Half Moon Bay Inn and across the street from the San Benito House.

Not very familar with venues in the area that meet what you are looking for but I have a planner to recommend. She’s worked with a few of my friends and she’s just wonderful…
