I would just ask her – if she agrees then you can give her something special.

If you give it to her first she may feel obligated –

and then who wants a reminder of something like that if she says “no”?

I asked my bridesmaids by printing out a 5 x 7 card from this site: http://www.dessy.com/diy-bridesmaid-cards/, writing a nice personal note on the back of each explaining why I wanted them to stand beside me, and included a picture of the two of us together. You could do something like that, and if you wanted to make it a ‘gift’ maybe include a nice frame also? Something that doesn’t necessarily scream ‘bridesmaid’ as much as ‘sister’.

I don’t think 42 is too old to be a bridesmaid either; a friend of mine actually had her mom as her maid of honor, so to each their own!

I agree, just ask her.  She alone knows what she will be comfortable with.  You don’t need to shower her with gifts, and I doubt most women would have use for a travel mug that says ‘bridesmaid’.
