Get what you paid for and wanted. You’re going to wear this ring the rest of your life, don’t settle it will only drive you nuts long-term.

Did you sign off a works order prior to the custom work bring undertaken? Has the jeweller admitted it was his error?

If it is his error and he departed from the works order or your verbal agreement, then he should remake the setting to fit the correct, second stone. He will be reluctant as he will be starting from scratch and may have to write off the existing setting or try and sell it on. That is not your fault or problem though.

I would have it reset in any event as the gap and poor fit would annoy me too, and as the pp said, you will wear this for the rest of your life so it needs to be right.

Lovely ring though (gap aside)  and congratulations!

You are not crazy to want what you paid for.  Take it back and make them fix their mistake.

I can see what what you are talking about.  Did you want your sapphire to sit a bit lower in the setting to prevent a bit of a “gap”?  The setting is so pretty–can we see a picture on your hand?  Did you sign the paper work accepting the workmanship as being OK?  You should definately get what you had origingally agreed upon…keep us posted.

seejanebee:  I feel for you. It’s easy to be gung-ho with the advice on an Internet forum, but in your shoes I’d feel just the same. I don’t like confrontation with people I like/ have liked IRL either.

I’d try to get a fuller picture from your fi as to what was agreed/ signed off, and whether their was lack of clarity on either or both sides. Obviously don’t interrogate your fi so he thinks you might be blaming him.

In terms of framing your request to the jeweller, you can always try the shit sandwich approach: the overall design and workmanship are  great but having given it a little time, you’ve realised the compromise around the stone and setting just isn’t working and it isn’t the ring you all intended, so you know it’s work, but could he please redo the setting to fit the stone. You know it will then be amazing.

If it were me, and there was any doubt as to where the fault lies, I would be prepared to contribute to the cost of the reset, for goodwill and because it is important.

I would tell him that while you’ve tried to like it as is you have your heart set on the ring you designed and paid for and that’s what you want to wear for the rest of your life. Good luck, Bee!

First—so very pretty!  But..I understand what you are saying.  And, I agree with the other poster–much easier to say what you should do and actually do the confronting IRL.  However, you said the jeweler did acknowlege his mistake, and I would hope would then be willing to correct that mistake at his cost.  You and your fiance did have it custom made for a reason–to get exactly what you both decided upon.  I really think your jeweler should honor that.

No advice required or desired-your ring your choice YOUR decision..go for it.  It has 0 to do with “spoiled” you get what you want as many times as you want it, that’s pretty much the final word.
