I can’t really see the color of the tiles, but I agree with the direction you are headed. The granite sounds great.

I would wait to paint until you have picked out  the granite, then pick a color from one of the flecks in the granite.

You can also paint the tiles , if you want to get rid of the pink/blue at the same time. You just have to use a special primer and it can totally change the look.

Have you considered ripping out that valance? It really dates the room.

I have painted bathroom wall tiles as a temporary fix. It was totally easy. You just clean them with TSP, sand them lightly, use Zinzer’s Bullseye  Primer, then paint. The paint job I did lasted 3 years and was still in good condition when I sold the place.

They actually recently painted the bathroom tiles at the office building where I work.It looks great.

I think your ideas sound great! We’re also working on redoing our kitchen in the next month or so. We got estimates, just have to finalize everything. I think grey-blue walls would be great with your cabinets and dark granite. Be sure to post pics when it is done. Would love to see it! 🙂

I really like your ideas. Just a thought, can you do something with that overhang? i don’t think the cabinets are that bad, but that cabinetty overhang thing by the sink is just really… down home country to me.

How fun! I love the idea of the dark charcoal granite. I think a blue would look nice, I’d just be careful to not pick something too dark because you don’t want to make the room appear smaller. If it is in your budget I’d maybe go for a new fridge and oven too (black or stainless)

Just food for thought – you may want to re-do the tile at the same time, but this all depends on the look you want for your counters.

You mentioned you were going to keep the tile, so therefore you will have granite that goes up the wall a bit. Not sure if this is your personal perference, but if you prefer to have the look of the counters on your second pic (those counters don’t go up the wall, instead the backsplash starts at the base where the L meets.)

If the cabinets are in good shape when it comes time to change the color, remember that you can paint the frames yourself and take the doors to an auto spray company to get them spray lacquered. They will look and wear like new.

I just have a couple random suggestions. If you are keeping the cabinets I would change the hardware. Those gold knobs could definitely be switched for something a little better. And if you replace the appliances, black or stainless as prev suggested. I would look into getting a counter-depth fridge so it doesn’t stick out into the room like that, but they are a little wider and I don’t know how much room you have there.

Are you going to change the flooring at all? I can’t tell if those are actual tile or not but that dark grout line stands out. You could go re-do the grout with something lighter so it doesn’t draw your eye to the squares on the floor. And I definitely second (third?) the suggestion to remove the valance/curtains and the overhang.

You can also rip out the wall tiles and put up a mosaic backsplash really easily.  My aunt just redid her kitchen with that and it looks very modern!
