Hey ladies.. so I am kind of at a loss of what I am supose to do. My fiance and I plan to just get hitched at the courthouse have an amazing honeymoon then come home and have a reception in Oct. 2012. Neither one of us have a passport. If i get a passport now am I going to have to get a new passport after I get married and change my name? I want to avoid paying the extra fees for that if necessary. What am I supose to do?

Is there a reason you need your passport now?
Check this out: it looks like if you make a name change within a year of a new passport, there’s no charge. If you can hold off on getting in until after Oct 2011, you’ll be set!

If you are leaving directly after your wedding you will need apply for and receive a passport in your maiden name before departing the U.S. in order to re-enter the after your international honeymoon.
Once you’ve returned, you should fill out the form requesting a name change in your current document and file it ASAP. Provided you submit the request within one (1) year of your first passport (with your maiden name) being issued there is no fee.

Yes you will have to get a new one with your married name…..but you might luck out on not having to pay any more fees. I’ve attached the link to the site for help on passports. http://travel.state.gov/passport/correcting/ChangeName/ChangeName_851.html
hope this helps!!

If your passport applied for within a year you do not have to pay to change the name.
Will it be within a year between your Honeymoon and wedding?

Yep…once you get married (if you are changing your last name), you’ll have to get another passport. I don’t think the name change fees are as much, but I’m not 100% sure.

Thank you for all the help. We want to get our passports in advance to insure that we will have everything to be able to go. Definatly will wait a while to make sure no extra fees are required! You guys are amazing!

I believe if you make a change within a year you can do it for free.
