from what i understand (no prior experience with this) D&E is a pregnancy term, so im thinking that a negative test would mean your body recognizes that it is no longer pregnant and is resetting itself to your normal cycle. After a miscarriage i believe it takes approx two months for your cycle to right itself again.

@Bee27:  Most doctors will recommend you wait at least 1 cycle before you start trying again. I had a D&E after a missed miscarriage and it gave my body time to heal. You want to be sure that your body is able to regulate itself again before you start trying again.

Some doctors will do a follow up, but most won’t. Mine didn’t, but because he said that your body will clear itself out naturally after the procedure. I think it’s more rare that there is any additional tissue left behind. If you’re concerned, you can give yourFDIC a call and request a follow up for peace of mind.

If it helps, I had cramping for about 2 weeks after and bled for over a month and a half afterwards. My doctor told me it was normal even though most women feel better after a few days and stop bleeding after a week or two. Just keep an eye on it. Take your temp (elevated means your body is fighting something like an infection). If you feel bad after a few more days, see if they’ll move your appt up.
