I have had two offers in the past few months and both included relocation costs and they were DRASTICALLY different. One was a % of the annual salary and the other was (up-to) a large lump sum.

I would take it like any other negotiations. State what you want and personalize it. For example when I was negotiating with the job that offered the % I wrote back. “You mentioned that ‘your business’ offers (X) amount for reimbursement of moving expenses; however, I was wondering if there is any flexibility in this amount? I will be moving X distance and will incur costs for ‘such and such’.

I hope this helps. Just remember it never hurts to ask.

I just asked something like “will there be money available to help with the cost of relocating” or something like that. They were able to provide airfare (necessary, as overseas) and some funds for shipping.

When my Darling Husband got transfered to a foreign country, they made him an offer for the new job with all the details. He literally came home with a 2 inch binder full of information. In that stack was info on moving and what they will pay. In hs case, they cover expenses to move using the movers they contract or offer a lump sum if you choose to hire your own movers. They also offered a lump sum for transporting he and I. He was able to negotiate a bit based on cost of living in the new place being higher but not much.
