Don’t tell them your budget, and if possible, don’t mention it’s a wedding.

You can’t avoid it if you’re looking at, say, a venue. But when booking rentals, you don’t have to say what you’re using them for (and sometimes weddings come with an automatic mark up).

Darling Husband and I usually asked flat out for a quote, and if it was high we let them know we were going to look for quotes elsewhere because it was too high. Sometimes that would make them automatically drop it, sometimes not.

And with our photographer, we looked at what they offered in their lowest price, and didn’t think we really had a need for printed proofs. We asked for a discount if we didn’t get those and they agreed.

Look for extras that you don’t need and/or offer a counter offer.

@nse83:  NEVER tell them your budget.  Say the price you want, etc. but do not tell them your budget.

And I agree with @MissMaryMc:.  Try to avoid saying it’s a wedding.  That might feel awkward but anything that has the word “wedding” attached goes up exponentially in price!!  We successfully negotiated with our vendors, and we did it by email.  I just said we want to use you guys, what can you do for me?

@nse83:  I would think a Holiday friday might actually jack prices up a little – that’s the way it is here.  Holiday weekends are usually expemt from the various day discounts.

Before giving them your date, I’d ask if they have discounts for fridays or holiday weekends.

Some will definitely do it, others may claim it’s more expensive to have to pay people to work holidays. But I’d ask for quotes before giving your actual date so they know as little as possible and aren’t biased ahead of time.
