This is why we went custom. I push everyone to go custom.

I have a Neil Lane from Kay’s. Since February I have only had one little stone fall out and it had to be sent in for sizing so they took care of that then. My Fiance did say though that he had a heck of a time because they kept messing things up when he was looking for the right ring. They didnt have a center stone with a good enough color or clarity in the whole store so he had to go buy the center stone from another jewler and have it set in the Neil Lane band. After all of the hassle he went through, he had my exact ring size and they were supposed to make it my size but when he gave it to me it was wayyyyyyyyy too big! It wouldnt even stay on my finger! It turns out they made it a size 7 when he told them 5 1/2!! But I will say… I absolutely love my ring and it is so different and beautiful that I get multiple complements a day!!

@dewingedpixie:  Not everyone can afford custom. I have a ring from Kay (not a Neil Lane) that was under $1000–we never could have gotten a custom ring for that.

I think the problem here lies with the shop where your store sends their jewelry. The rings being out for a long time is not the fault of the designer at all. Two weeks is standard for Kay, since they don’t do any work on site, longer during heavy periods (usually around Christmas and Valentine’s Day).

@vorpalette:  I was actually shocked how cheap some of the custom can be done. Even if you dont go completely custom I’m a big supporter of the small local guy over big box chain. They do serve a purpose but I feel like the prices are so much higher than they really should be as well.

@vorpalette:  I agree with you there!  I too have a ring from Kays and it is not Neil Diamonds either.  I never had any problems with it at all!!

I have a Neil Lane ring from Kay and I have worn it every day for a year and not yet had a single issue.  and it’s freakin gorgeous. so they’re not all bad.

We went custom from a local jewelry store for this reason. I have heard so many sad stories from friends and fellow bees. I wish you luck!

I used to work in downtown Los Angeles’ jewelry district and advise ALL of my friends to go get custom rings. You certainly CAN get a lovely little diamond ring for $800 if you visit a small local jeweler. Sure, it wont have a Tiffanys logo on it, and it might only be less than 1/2 a carat, but small local jewelers take great pride in their craftsmanship. And since they have little to no advertising, you literally pay only for the materials and the labor. A $4,500 ring from Tiffanys that I wanted (the flower ring) is being made for me for only $1,100. So if that tells you anything… LOCAL and CUSTOM is best! 🙂
