I have a freelance position as a consultant. The job is excellent, and the flexibility will be so perfect when the kid is born as I can work from home 98% of the time. I really like my job, but I have to admit my work has been suffering a bit recently as the MS has been tough during this first trimester (I’m about 10 weeks in), and I did get side tracked with a few family emergencies during this past month. My plan was to wait another 6 weeks to tell my boss once I was starting my second trimester, which would give me some time to catch up on work and knock off some major projects to show how awesome I am before breaking the news.
…Well, it turns out my boss wants to send me to Africa for a two day meeting in the Spring. Before I got pregnant I did ask to travel more, so I kind of brought this on my self which makes it worse. Under normal circumstances I would jump on the opportunity, however to enter the country I would need a vaccination for Yellow Fever which I can not get while pregnant. They need to book the tickets in advance, meaning I will need to tell my boss on Monday.
I’m so nervous about this. In general my boss is great, but I know my work hasn’t been up to par recently and techincally I don’t have much job security on a freelance basis. It doesn’t help that I eseentially asked to go do more travel with the company and now have to decline. Of course without a doubt the baby comes first and I need to suck it up, but I’m not sure how to go about this…
Any words of wisdom?
