I would recommend calling around to some boutique stores around you to make sure they have samples in your size.  I’m a street size 26 and was trying on size 24 dresses.  I also had a horrendous experience at David’s – it’s all about who you get as a consultant, honestly.  She kept sending dresses that she thought would look nice on me, even after I specifically told her I didn’t want anything mermaid, lacy, etc. (I can’t get away with that fitted at my size).  She was also trying to shove me into size 14 & 16s, which was just uncomfortable in so many ways.  They then called me repeatedly for weeks following up until I threatened legal action. I was very surprised at how affordable some of the boutique dresses were, and how much nicer of an experience it was working with them.

I’m 5’4″ and a size 12/14 (depending lol).  I had a great experience shopping for a dress which surprised me as I hate shopping.  Went to 2 stores with just my mom and managed to find something I loved pretty easily.

I was really nervous going shopping, too, since I’m like six feet tall with a 40G bra size and shoulders like a linebacker (shirt size 22, pants size 18 with a 34.5″ inseam). David’s Bridal Collections in Atlanta was the only place I went because I wanted cheap more than I wanted designer. What I got was a gorgeous dress in the exact style I was looking for, a consultant who understood my self-consciousness about my body and made me feel comfortable, and paid less than $1,000 (including alterations and veil, I paid $1,255). I don’t think I look too bad…

I’m 5’4, a size 18, and wear a 38H bra. I am also short waisted, but have a defined waist.  I kind of look like a snowman- a figure 8!  I have NEVER had good luck shopping.  Homecoming and prom usually ended up with me in tears and my mom willing to buy the first thing that didn’t make me sob.  I went to David’s Bridal and tried on about 10 dresses.  I found the one I wanted that day.  I was happy because they had dresses that fit my bust and hips, if not in length.

I will tell you that I was surprised at the dress I fell in love with.  I thought I wanted an A line chiffon or tulle- not too bulky.  What I ended up with was a lace fit and flare with a corset back.  I had skimmed through that dress 100 times.  It wasn’t even in my top 10.

What I recommend is having your own strapless bra- they won’t have one that will fit you and it will just upset you.  I used one that had clear straps because I intended to have sleeves added to whatever I found, but now I’ve decided against it.  If you plan to wear spanx or any other shape wear, wear while dress shopping.  If you’ve got jiggle, lumps, or bumps you’re not happy with in your regular clothes, you’ll probably see them when you try on the dress.  If you are happy with your shape and don’t plan on wearing shape wear, that’s awesome too!

Bring a supportive team.  If your mom is a negative nellie, bring a bridesmaid, your dad, or whoever makes you feel confident and supports your choices.  If you feel like you need to go by yourself, do that!  I have a friend who lacks confidence and didn’t want anyone seeing her in her dresses until she had “the one.”  She made a choice that she felt good in and surprised everyone with it. What’s most important is that you stay relaxed, stay positive, and try to have fun.  If you have a dress where you like most of it, but have a small issue or two, ask to see the alterations specialist to see if it would be feasible to alter!
