Do you know if the mom is breastfeeding?  Including some herbal tea for nursing would be a thoughtful treat for her.

I would do a gift basket actually for the mom, the baby will be getting a lot of stuff and the mom prob would like little something for her.  I know when my munchkin was born, could have used something like that.

@PinkPandaBear:  Yogi Tea makes one called Nursing Support and I used an organic one called “Mother’s Milk”… I think they’re common enough to find in a grocery store, although I bought mine at a health food store.  What about a memory book?  One of those where you fill in info for the baby?

As for diapering items, you can’t have enough of that stuff!  Maybe not the diaper cream, b/c I was so picky about what I used that I ended-up with way too many creams that had to be returned.  A soft, pretty blanket for the baby was always a welcome gift in our home…

Sorry for posting so much, but my friend just had a baby, so it’s fresh in my mind.  She really appreciated that someone set up food delivery for her first week home.  Might be tough for someone you don’t know well, and expensive, but she was thrilled to know a delicious meal was on it’s way.

Plain white Gerber cloth diapers – not for diapering, some of the best burp cloths; super secret from a mommy friend of mine

big package of white socks for 3 mth and 6 mth – everybody is going to buy the cute matching sock sets but at the end of a crazy day it’s nice to be able to grab two white socks and know they match and if you lose one out of a pack of 12, you can still match the unmatched sock

Dishwasher basket for bottles and nipples (Target has a great one; Munchkin I think) – new mommies tend to start out sterilizing but one long night when she’s up and exhausted she will use this and love you for it; this my gold standard of gift giving and I always get a big thank you down the road

@PinkPandaBear:  My fav was from Texas Medicinals but I’m guessing you’d have to order it online (Whole Foods carries it where I am).  Traditional Medicinals was good too, but I drink Yogi as well… I’m a bit of an herbal tea fanatic in general.  I guess you can’t go wrong!

I’m pregnant right now n a ftm, so i have no experience on what i’d need…but just wanted to point out that if the baby was born already, she may already have a diaper bag….just a thought….ive made a few baby baskets before n included white socks as pp suggested n also packs of plain white onesies n burp clothes….n i usually do 3 mnths or 6 months (also as a pp suggested) just cuz she may already have gotten a bunch of newborn stuff already….

@PinkPandaBear:  Yeah, I would think she would probably already have a diaper bag. Plus, some women are super picky about what they carry, considering it’s going to pretty much replace a purse for the next couple of years.

DHs coworkers got us a box of 1000 wipes from Sam’s Club, which was great.  (We still have some left, and our daughter is 5 months old.)

Other than that, I second the posters who said food.  If you can throw in a gift card for food or something, it is literally a life saver.  Or maybe a B&N gift card if the new Mom likes to read (I loved things that reminded me I was still a person, not just a sleep-deprived milk covered zombie.)
