I am clueless about diamonds. I recently received a three-stone ring, with a larger center stone and slightly smaller side stones. My mom realized it’s not really her taste and decided to give it to me. I like the ring but am already pretty loaded up with my engagement ring, wedding band, and special band on my left hand and several rings I like to alternate on my right hand. It has a broken prong and she said I could do whatever I want with it – fix the setting or reset it however I would want.
I have been wanting an upgrade to my diamond studs, as well as get a necklace pendant. Would it make sense to use these diamonds for those items? I realize I need to talk to my jeweler and get specs, but aren’t diamonds used for rings usually better quality than those used in less visible places, like ears? Would it be silly to repurpose in this way? Also curious what others think are ideal carats for ear studs and a pendant. Also, what happens to the setting? I believe it is platinum. Would I resell it or repurpose in some way? As I said, I’m pretty clueless about jewelry and diamonds.

It definitely would not be silly to reuse those diamonds in other pieces.
I have a 1 ct diamond pendant that was originally an earring that my stepmother gave me when she passed away. It’s not the best quality, but my jeweler set it in a bezel and it looks beautiful and I wear it every day!
I also have another diamond earring that I put into a RHR. Not ring quality, but you can’t tell.
As for studs, I think that’s a great use of those stones. Do you have any idea what size they are? I started with .25 ctw, then moved up to 1 ctw and about 1.5 years ago, I upgraded again to 1.65 ctw. I think 1 ctw is a really perfect size to start. I wore those for 8 years before I upgraded.

absolutely not silly! Your idea to use the stones for stud earrings and a pendant is excellent, you won’t regret it. Here is a picture of the pendant I had made from my original e-ring center pear stone. The ring had sat in my jewelry box for years after I got divorced. I absolutely love the pendant and wear it often!

not silly at all! My aunt had my grandmother’s diamond engagement ring reset into a bezel pendant and gave it to me as a wedding gift. I get lots of compliments on it! She kept the setting and put her birthstone in it to keep for herself.

I set my diamond from a previous engagement ring on a point in a necklace. It’s lovely.

thanks! The pear is a .58 so pretty much the embryo of your honker.😉 I do love it and the diamond is very sparkly.
