Unfortunately, I doubt any vendors will even consider booking you until 2017 most likley. I’m getting married June 2016, got engaged May 2014. My venue wouldn’t book until a year out, and my photographer usually does no more than two years out.  I’m not sure DJs, bakers, or florists will even consider either because so much can change in that long, most notably their prices will probably go up. But it can’t hurt to put feelers out, right?

I know we had to do a long engagement because of where we are in our lives, but honestly I wish it was shorter. Waiitng it KILLING me. We’re in different states now though. If you already live together maybe waiting won’t be so terrible. If I were you I’d put it to the side for now and revisit wedding planning in a year or two. Just think about general ideas and budget and start saving!

SherryB:  Actually it might be closer to your situation than you think as we have known each other for 13 years and have a 12 and 10 year old together.

Then having so much time may be a good thing.  You’ll have time to save up for your house & dream wedding.  It sounds beautiful!

Aaah ok I get it now!! I guess we waited long too but to get engaged, took us 7.5 yrs! I get your point of why did he ask so early if you weren’t gonna marry anytime soon, but at the same time it’s a nice promise to have.. I don’t think you need to do any planning yet though you got plenty of time!

SherryB:  Congrats on getting engaged 🙂

I had a 37 month engagement (shorter than yours, but still long!). My venue booked us a year and a half out and while we got our first choice, there were already other couples looking into that weekend too!

One of the benefits of having a long engagement is lots of time for planning and sales and DIY projects. I was able to get a LOT of things on sale that I wouldn’t have gotten if Ihad to pay full price… Also, I had most of my projects and things done way in advance so I wasn’t too stressed out the week before my wedding, which was awesome because I got to enjoy that time! 🙂

It is all about YOUR timeline. Whatever works best for y’all! We have been engaged since November of 2013, and at the time I was impatient, but now that our date is coming up (October 24th) I am SO glad we had a long engagment. Enjoy your time together and don’t really start the planning until about a year and a half out. Really, there’s nothing you can or should be doing right now as far as venues and planners. So much can change in 4 years, so I would enjoy your relationship as fiances right now!

Congrats on your engagement! By our wedding date (September) we will have been engaged a year. Your circumstance makes all the difference. We each have 2 kids from our previous marriages. Its a second marriage but first real wedding for both of us. Its great that ya’ll are being smart about it, planning far ahead. People really don’t realize how much comes with planning a wedding and how stressful it can be. I’m sure it’s going to be gorgeous and exactly what you envision.
