Hi Ladies ( Pretty Bees),
Thought I would introduce myself to you all, my name is Rio (No Duran Duran songs please J). I have just got engaged to my darling after 3 years together. We are both from the UK and met here in sunny/crazy Dubai. I was already settled here in a job and he was on holiday visiting his best friend (who I worked with). He came along to a Christmas dinner I was cooking for all my Dubai Expat friends who were alone and away from family and that was it, BOOM, 2 weeks later he moves here and we have been together ever since :).
So, we got engaged last week, I’ll tell the proposal story later on another thread, very sweet J. Problem is, I am so confused already my head hurts :). We are from the UK, so we have our close friends there and we both have quite large families, who we are both close too. We then have a close set of friends here in Dubai who we consider our ‘Dubai’ family, lol.
Our dream is to have an intimate wedding in Sri – Lanka, only 4 hours from Dubai, plus I am half Sri-Lankan, so have some good connections there. He is dead against having it in the UK, as we left there for a reason and we both hate the idea of having an over the top wedding in Dubai….Problem is, our families will not be contributing to the wedding (I don’t think) and we make mediocre wages. It will be fine if we can have a 50 persons guest list, but we have already counted and our total comes to about 110 and that is CUTTING BACK! – WE CANT CHOOSE between family, they all mean a lot to us and we are all so close……but the venue and wedding package we love for a wedding, the cost will be too high for our budget if more than 50 people attend…..
VAT DO DOOOO? :(. Someone will always be offended! The most important people have already said they are coming no matter what, even if we have it in Mongolia, which is wonderful, but I am already getting godmothers and close family friends, asking me if they are invited :S.
Some people are saying have your small ceremony in Srilanka, and then do a big blessing/party in the UK, which I understand, but I really just want to have the whole thing together on the same day, and to share it with my loved ones. Plus the expense of having it in SL then flying to the UK to have a big party will be difficult, what’s the point of that, if my main issue there is budget?
We have tentatively set a date in April 2013. We could delay for another year, a two year engagement and the budget thing will be less of a stress, BUT I will be 33 by then and do I really want to wait? It’s illegal here in Dubai to be living together as a couple and for safety/logistical reasons it makes sense that we marry sooner rather than later, plus I can’t wait to be a wife to my long term partner J 2 years is looooooooooooooong, booooo! – However the smart/logical side of me says wait.
Sorry for my rant, but I have been checking this site out for a while and we all seem to share similar insecurities, excitement & worries from far and wide and I would love some friendly, non-biased advice. Oh and congratulations to you all whether engaged, married, divorced or happily single, lol J
Lots of love Rio x
