Welcome!  I had a long engagement too and I waited until about a year to really plan because I figured I would change my mind a lot over a 3 year period.  Others on here will tell you to start right away, so the opinions differ.

Welcome to the bee!!  I would suggest starting to look at venues now and booking one sooner rather than later just because your wedding is around the busier season.  Other than booking your venue ahead of time, I agree with @missasb to wait until you are about a year out to start really planning and booking other things.  My engagement is only going to be about a year long and my ideas I had at the beginning have changed quite a bit over the year!

Oh I do agree about maybe booking the big things sooner just to be safe (location, photog, caterer, etc).

@teezee: Hi there ๐Ÿ™‚ Im new as well, (minutes in fact lol).Welcome ๐Ÿ™‚

I concur with the previous poster about a year before for planning. I have read around a bit, but the only reason I could see for a longer planning period than that would be for high demand venues and vendors really. If you adamant on having a particular vendor/venue and during prime wedding season I would consider how much demand they would be in during that time, and if you want that for yourself. Other than that, I believe several wedding sites have a full wedding plan laid out for you for a year, with a monthly break down (I think the Knot does, or even Project Wedding) so perhaps thats a good place to start, in order to understand the pacing of planning:) Cant be too hard to find on the internets!

I hope this helps!

Hiya fellow Pittsburgher!!!! Welcome to the hive!

It’s never too early to plan around here. A lot of venues are already booked through 2011! We have our venue booked and now are looking for photographers for our engagement photos for our save the dates.

I have to say sometimes its easier just to do it quick.  We decided a week ago to get married this year.  So last week we decided to get married December 18, 2010.  We booked the chapel and a banquet hall, got the dresses, tux, rings, flowers, photo in that short of time.  Everything fell into place.  If you have time book the main places and work on little things after.  good luck to you.

Welcome to the ‘Bee! Everyone has different opinions and reasons for either getting a head-start on planning or holding off. For my Fiance and I, we are trying to start planning our 2012 wedding now since we will be starting the home buying process in a few months. We feel that if we do the bulk of our research and basic decision-making now, it’ll be easier to continue the planning during or after the home-buying process.

@laurachoiniere: Wow thats amazing; I dunno if I could do that myself (I think the long planning will help me make sure I dont forget anything! Im quite absent minded at times) But thats amazing that you planned all of that on such short notice and it all went so smoothly for you ๐Ÿ™‚ Nicely done!

Welcome to WB!

I think you should start looking at ideas to see what you want and what you don’t want.  As for putting down deposits, I think you have some time.  I think it’s good to have your venue booked about 1 year before the wedding.

I, also, think you should try to enjoy your engagement, if you haven’t done already. I know I waited about a good month or two before I got bridal magazines.  I wanted the cloud 9 feeling from my engagement to last as long as I could because I know wedding planning can be a bit stressful. ๐Ÿ™‚
