Oh darn….First of all, I am so sorry you are faced with this dilema.  Normally I am 100% practical and would say to get the car.  You NEED it.  However, it sounds like your car is functional, just needs a bit of work.  I”m assuming it’s paid off.  What if you took the honeymoon now and saved up for a car?  You mentioned you don’t need it until you have kids.  Getting the SUV now will increase costs so much.  Higher insurance, high title & registration, WAY more in gas money, and most importantly, a large car payment.  I would go on the honeymoon and budget every month the amount of money you would be spending on the SUV and then set it aside for a large downpayment.

I kinda agree with PP.  I usually say that needs come before vacations, but it sounds like your current car may get you through another year or so.  Plus if you are starting to have kids in the near future, who knows when you’ll be able to do something like this again soon.

I’m of the opposite opinion, especially considering that you live in Alberta! Personally I’d want a new car for the winter to know I wasn’t going to have any issues while on the road, and would put Mexico off for a year {you can still go while TTC or while preggo!} and go with the car first.

I think you should get your car fixed first. That big clunk that you are hearing could be the motor mounts or the drive train. If those fail, it won’t be drivable. New tires would also be in order. If you have bald tires and it rains or there is ice on the road, you could lose traction and get into an accident or worse. I say fix the car, go on a minimoon closer to home, and then if you still want a new vehicle, save up for it and get it next year.

Honeymoon! I’m normally very practical but I think the honeymoon should come first (since your car is still functioning). If you don’t go now, it may be awhile before you get to go. Enjoy!

I am with PP who suggested a slightly used car and trip. I was goinf to suggest something cheaper than an SUV but it sounds like your winters require 4WD.
