I’m not from New York, but I drive home for Christmas from DC to Boston up the 95 corridor, and my advice is to avoid it at all costs.  Seriously, it always sucks, and with the Sandy closures, it’s going to be even worse.

In NJ, I’d take 287 to the Tappen Zee Bridge.  From there you can either get back on 95 in CT or take Route 15/Merritt Parkway and get back on 95 closer to New Haven.  (Any time I’m traveling from Boston to Philly, I avoid going across the GW Bridge/95/NYC.)

Just a heads up, 95 south of New Haven can get backed up on a normal day, so I’m sure it will busy with holiday travel as well.

@curlybride2012:  287 is what I was going to suggest, also. You shouldn’t hit a ton of traffic on it like you will on 95. If you took 95 you’d be in for at least two hours of traffic

@Leelee26:  Just as a heads up, the drive on that Wednesday will without a doubt be traffic-filled.  I drive from NYC to DC every year that day, and the drive is a couple hours longer than normal.

It’s not unbearable, but I live in North Jersey and used to take 95 to come home from school in Baltimore. I used to get stuck in traffic whenever the highway divided, and there is always traffic at the tolls that branch off toward NYC, and that was just on a regular day. The day before Thanksgiving is going to be terrible. Also, avoiding 95 and taking 287 instead should save you about $8 in tolls

Yeah, I’m just talking about 95 in general through the NE corridor.

@curlybride2012: +1

when me and my family drive up to Boston from VA we ALWAYS take the Tappen Zee… may be longer milage but it avoids white knuckle traffic on the George Washington.
