Fiance and I are considering going to NYC for our honeymoon in October (which is apparently the most expensive time to go). The airfare is pretty reasonable though. I’ve been to NYC twice, stayed in the Wellington which was OK nothing fancy, and DoubleTree which was lovely. We want to do the typical touristy things and I was thinking Midtown/Manhattan would be the best location. Do you have any tips or secrets for affordable but nice hotel?

The Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn in Times Square are new and very reasonably priced- plus you’re in Times Square so you have every transportation option right out your front door!
My wedding is in NYC in October, it’s a beautiful time of year!!

I stayed at the Ameritania on 54th for a few weeks. It was central to Times Square and was very nice

NYC Bee here
I would think of the things you would like to do first, and then find a hotel. For example, if you don’t want to be in the center of everything, avoid Times Square (I find it too chaotic and crowded, but to each their own!). I would go more midtown east, which still offers easy transportation but less crowds. I recently had some family stay at the Lexington on 48th and Lexington, and they really liked it. A little pricier is the Affinia Gardens, and sometimes, depending on the weekend, you can get ok deals at the Waldforf (not the Waldorf towers, which is very expensive). I also think there is a hotel called the Benjamin near the east river, but not sure on their costs.
Also check out airbnb or short-stay hotels, which may be a little more private.
With any hotel, definitely mention it’s your honeymoon – you will probably get free drinks at the bar or other things comp’d 🙂 I’ve been engaged for a year, and just now told shops here in NYC that I was getting married in next month and they started giving me discounts and free stuff.
Sometimes you can get deals on Living Social or Thrillist, but you really need to make sure the hotel will honor the deal and lock in the rate. Same goes for restaurants! There are also some great touristy packages you can sign up for to save some cash.
FYI, October is a great time of year to go to the Top of The Rock ! And the parks are gorgeous! I wonder why it’s so expensive? Is it Columbus day weekend?

We just went to NYC for five nights and stayed at the Holiday Inn in Times Square (South). I used HOTWIRE.com to book it (meaning you blind book) but the hotel is nice and it was more affordable then others.
I paid just under $900 for the room and we were located within walking

Honestly, look into Long Island City, Queens. There are several (NEW!) hotels in the area, at a fraction of the cost. Subway is right there and you are 5 stops from Times Square (assuming you even want to visit that insane place). 😉

I’m going to second looking in Long Island City. And I would also consider checking out airbnb, there are some really fabulous apartments in NY on there that would save you a ton of money.

AirBnb’s are THE BEST in NYC.
I used to live there and we try to visit here and there. Sometimes hotel rates are cheaper, but they aren’t classy or nice at all (well unless you’re looking to pay that kind of money). I think NYC better for lodging with AirBnb. Something about getting being able to get the true city skyline, rooftop/fire escape access, and being right above the bodegas is so much more fufilling than a stuffy hotel with a bunch of tourists.
