ARGH.

I can get the paper free on campus, but I don’t LIKE reading an actual paper. I do prefer reading books to online, but I hate the large pages of a newspaper, and then they just take up space until I can haul them off to be recycled.

So disappointed.

I believe that most news online outlets will be doing this soon. A few major papers already have. I used to be a reporter for a small local paper where I live, and it is owned by Gannett, the same parent company as the USA Today. Well, as a test, Gannett chose two of its newspapers (ours included) to start charging people a montly subscrption for reading online content. The media industry is dying, so I think this is done in an effort to prevent the classic newspaper from going under. Sucks, but I only expect to see this to get worse.

🙁

I remember when the WSJ did this too. As far as I know you still have to pay to view the website, but I haven’t checked in years since they originally started charging. Ultimately they’ve lost my ‘business’ as a result..

Hey, the Gray Lady can’t keep giving it away for free forever! The only way I get my news is by reading it online, so I’m going to have to fork over the cash for it. At least with the NY Times I feel like I’ll be getting my money’s worth.

@KitKatNYC: That’s true.

My local newspaper charges for online, too, and I will NOT pay for that junk. At least the NY Times would be worth it. Is it terrible that I will more likely just switch to CNN etc?

@Amaryllis: I feel like the quality of CNN has gone downhill, and the comments section is downright nasty, vs. the NY Times comments which are always so witty and fun. Maybe if everyone resists their demands for $15 a month they will cave?

I pay for cable…if I want news (big IF), I’ll watch TV.

I’m happy to pay for the Times.  What passes for “news” on television is worse than useless, and the Gray Lady is one of the last bastions of actual journalism around.
