I agree, try to narrow your focus. I spent 14 days in Sydney, Brisbane, and the Whitsundays last year and it was too much traveling and not enough relaxing. I loved everywhere we went, though.

@Cummins59:  It’s southern hemisphere, so it’s summer – the temperatures will be great on either island.

I just came back from New Zealand…and that gets my vote. it’s a BEAUTIFUL country…and you’ll have a blast. If you go, check out the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua. It’s rated one of the top 10 spas in the world, and it’s SUPER romantic (and By The Way…they have private, clothing optional spas which are perfect for a honeymoon). Also, they have beaches in New Zealand where the water is warm (fed by a hot spring). Look up Hot Water Beach. Check out the Coromandel Peninsula. Cathedral Cove is particularly stunning and romantic. You could also go watch the wild horses run on 90 mile beach or go wine tasting in Marlborough…   There is SO much to do in NZ…and all that I mentioned is just on the North Island! The South Island is amazing as well.

Plus, if you follow deals on Air Pacific (now called Fiji Airways), you might be able to score a free stop in Fiji on the way home. For about $1100/person (after taxes), my fiance and I got roundtrip airfare to New Zealand, with a free 2-night stop in Fiji with hotel! We could have extended the stopover if we wanted to…but my fiance had to get back to work. They run a few sales a year–so keep an eye out. It’s SO worth it…even if you can only stay in Fiji for a few days.

As an Aussie, I think Australia is a great destination but, as other posters said, 10-12 days isn’t really enough to see much of Australia. This is a huge country and the major cities/attractions usually have many kilometres separating them, so travel is either expensive (flying) or time-consuming. Not to mention Australia in December can be incredibly hot – temperatures in the high 30s are pretty common, and the humidity is intense in Queensland!

New Zealand is beautiful though! Very easy to see in a more limited time-frame. My parents travelled all of NZ in just two weeks, and they had heaps of time, plus the weather is likely to be a little cooler (not cold, but not as hot as Queensland!).

For 10 days I vote NZ. Anything over that I vote Australia. It’s amazing but 10 days isn’t enough time.

I agree with the others, I’m in Aus and think it’s awesome but 10 days isnt enough! If you go to the West or North it will be quite hot in December also. NZ migh have milder weather and probably better suited to a short trip

@LadyElva:  Totally agree as a fellow Aussie.

Check out the South island as suggested by everyone else. I have only been to the North island but my kiwi fiance is dying to take me to the South island. It looks stunning in the pictures!

@Cummins59:  I use to live in the North island of New Zealand, it is absolutely gorgeous. I would reccoment North Island for that time of year vs. South. There is so much to do!! May i suggest a trip down from Aukland to Rotorua (one of the most popular tourist destinations and my home town) and along the way opt to stop at the Waitomo Caves, i promise you will not be dissapointed! You walk through and take a boat ride and thousands of glow worms light up the “night sky” its amazing!!
