I am a longtime lurker, first time poster! I am *about* to be engaged to my boyfriend of 7 years (as of January), and I know that he really wants to propose in January, on our anniversary (the 6th). We have talked about it numerous times, and he really wants me to have the ring I want because I will be wearing it forever. He has said that the budget will be ~3400, which will fit in with what I was looking at (without the center stone, which I was hoping for around a 3/4 ct):
I want yellow gold and a heart shaped stone, which Ring Bearer has told me that they can do via a special order (for the same price). They don’t return my calls (I have to call them back), and don’t seem to know anything about when the setting would get in. Their stones seem to be overpriced, and the special order can take 6-8 weeks to complete, maybe more, “depending on the vendor” (??).
I call a few locally owned jewelers, and one gets back to me in less than an hour with a price quote on a custom piece CAD designed and the (amazing from the specs) center stone. Problem- the price he quoted is 3700 (total w/stone). The stone is a .80 ct heart shaped H color and SI clarity, that is proportionate (not too skinny or fat). He called the vendor and he says that the stone is beautiful, and that he will be buying it himself if I don’t want it so he will be getting it in regardless.
Ring Bearer can do it for sure in my price range (possibly smaller .65 center stone, no better specs and they can only get in 2 stones at a time to look at), but then again I know nothing about the custom jeweler. I have looked up reviews (all custom reviews were positive) and this is their website:
Other local jewelers have told me that “jewelry exchange” places are no better than pawn shops at making high quality jewelry. To me, it seemed like this was a legit small family owned jeweler, but now I really don’t know what to think at all. Side note- the arlington jewelry exchange said that they could replate only the white gold head using electroplating and that would not damage the rest of the yellow gold- I have no idea if that is true.
Thoughts? Opininons? Would you go with Ring Bearer or a jeweler you had just talked to over the phone?
