We are considering the Newberry Library for our reception (and maybe our ceremony as well). I’d appreciate any specific insights from those who are planning or have planned a wedding and/or reception there. In particular, information about what you liked/didn’t like, quicky issues, etc. We’d probably have about 225 people for a seated dinner and a band for dancing.

I’ve booked a wedding for December 12th at the Newberry. I’ve never attended an event there as a guest, but the two event planners (both named Karen) are so enthusiastic and want you to see weddings there. So E and I went to see one – to see what it looked like all decorated.
We are having our ceremony there b/c we don’t want to get married in a church. I just love the Newberry. $6000 is pretty comparable to other venues in the city, but you are allowed to pick out your own caterer and essentially provide your own alcohol. Also their chairs are nice, not requiring chair covers (more savings).
The only concern is that 225 is probably going to be tight there. I think that’s near their max number. But if the Karens say you can do it, they’ll make it happen.
Also, as a nerdy (and overly romantic) aside, have you read The Time Traveler’s Wife? It’s set in Chicago and is a great, quick read. The protoganist works at the Newberry.
What did you decide to do?

I haven’t been to the Newberry, so sorry I can’t offer personal experience, but I use Ylep for most of my reviews, and there are quite a few of the Newberry on there
Also, here are some awesome photos of weddings at the venue!
