I am newly engaged (11 days now) and am still on holiday in China where my Fiance proposed. He surprised me with a gorgeous .75 ct asscher cut colorless IF Diamond in petite trellis platinum setting from Blue Nile. We loved it but when placed on my finger we both thought the setting seemed too thick (2.3mm). It took some glory away from the diamond. Also the ring was one size too large. So sadly we parted with the ring via FedEx and will return to Australia, newly engaged with no ring to show while it is being reset. We chose a pave 1.5mm petite cathedral setting.
While I wait for my ring, my fiance bargained for a stand in ring in the Beijing subway. It cost $3.80 AUD 🙂
I like to think of it as a .35 ct brilliant cut paste stone in a gold coloured tapered solitaire with a reeces peanut butter cup tin setting. I hope my friends and family will be impressed 🙂
2 pics for reference. ..2nd one is the ring before sending away. ..1st is the stand in.

Congratulations! Hopefully you’ll have your beautiful, new and improved ring back in no time.
I used to live in Beijing and miss it a lot – even those subway vendors! Hope you managed to get some good weather there.

Congratulations on your engagement!! I’m sorry you didn’t like your setting; you must have felt crushed at not being able to wear your engagement ring right away. But, I love your story about how your Fiance bought your stand-in ring in the subway in Beijing. That is such a sweet story, and definitely will be something fun to share with your kids in the future … and even their kids, too!
Your diamond is beautiful, and I hope you have your new setting soon!

@violet182: I was in a similar situation, I LOVE my diamond but not the setting. I talked to him about it and we got it re-set in my dream setting and I LOVE it. Good luck with everything…and your diamond is absolutely gorgeous!

@gelaine22: Thanks, I will deflated update with a picture of the new setting.
@peonyinparis: It was great being proposed to on the unrestored section of the great wall. It was romantic and freezing and the fog was so thick you couldn’t see the mountain. Beautiful icicle covered trees though.
@wrkbrk: That was all my fiance had to work with…. That I love the asscher cut!
@longtimemrs: Thank you! I did actually wear the ring non-stop for 2 days but then we thought I had better stop wearing it if I wanted them to take it back! I’m glad their return policy is so easy. I just got an update on the new setting and I should have it on my hand on the 20th. Yay!
@Merinda1994: Yes I loved the diamond. .. He actually offered to upgrade the diamond seeing as we were getting it changed anyway but I insisted we keep the same one as he proposed with it and it has special meaning. Any bigger and I might feel weird about it….He already spent alot! I’m glad he just wants to make me happy.

HAHA, I love the stand in ring from the subway! Darling Husband and I did this for our honeymoon because we went diving a lot and I was afraid I’d lose my custom made rings. I think mine cost about $6USD.
Congratulations, and I agree with your choice, a more petite setting will help your diamond to really pop!

My shipping notification says the 18th…..so impatient!! Just a few more days to go. I decided not to wear my fake ring to out because I want to save that feeling for my actual ring.
What’s weird is that everyone congratulated me but noone asked where the ring was?
Anyway, my fiance is very excited too because he loves that newly engaged feeling and very much wants that ring on my finger (who knew guys felt that way?)

@violet182: You will love your new setting! It is what I have.

@violet182: Everyone who I know who got engaged had to send their ring back for resizing or resetting. It is totally normal to have to wait to see the ring!

LOL congratulations; this means you have friends with basic manners! I couldn’t believe how many people demanded to know “why he didn’t get a ring” when it got out that I was engaged before the custom ring we ordered came in. I thought my fiance was being overly sensitive/cautious when he said he didn’t want to announce it till the ring was in because that would happen… but he was right. It was all acquaintances/coworkers who asked about it; our actual friends and family aren’t that rude. But it was a surprising number of people.

@violet182: I never assume someone irl has a ring, thus I never ask as that could embarass them, I try to look surreptiously if they announce/mention they are engaged. So I’m not surprised others didn’t ask you about your ringt. Congrats on your engagement. 🙂
