One of my FI’s sister’s name is Amelia, and they call her Mel. Personally, I love the nickname Lia! I also love the suggestion of Mila.

My daughter’s name is Amelia. We called her Amy as an infant but when she started to talk she started calling herself Mimi. We didn’t know if she meant it as her name…or was saying me..me.

Anyhow her own self proclaimed nickname stuck. Barely anyone knows her real name is Amelia..lol. even when I call the school and say her name..I have to correct and say Mimi and they go..ooh Mimi!!!

She’s 10…

I love the name, love Ami, Mimi, Mila. But as a girl with an unusually spelled name, I have to put my two cents in on this one too. I really would go with the regular spelling. I love my name and its spelling (derived from one language, but happens to be phonetically the same as a related name in a different language) but even after 25+ years it’s still a little disheartening and frustrating when people spell it wrong, which is often.

I have a name with an alternative (biblical) spelling.  It was a pain growing up, but as an adult, I have no lingering resentment.  As long as the nickname is easy to spell, you’re fine.  I think Mel is really cute.

lalacoffee:  It’s a beautiful name and rolls easily off the tongue.

I wouldn’t worry about a nickname.

I tutored a girl with a sister named Millie, but her full name was Amelia.

We just named our daughter Emilia, and we call her Emmy, Ems, Melia, Monkey, and Monks. All this to say don’t worry about the nickname, you’ll find one after she arrives that you love and that fits her.

I have a name that no one can spell, and obvi we went for a different spelling on baby girl’s name. If you love it, stick with it! It rarely bothers me when people misspell my name (unless they are a close family member because come on), and now I make a fun game out of seeing if random stranger can spell it correctly on accident. 🙂

As someone with a uniquely spelled name, I am not an ounce upset by it. In fact, it’s actually been a fun talking point and has been used as an ice breaker on more than one occasion.

lalacoffee:  I know you’ve said you’re solid on the spelling but they are actually two different names.

MancBee:  She can still spell/pronounce whatever name however she wants. All that matters is what it means to her…

OP I like the name Ameilia, why does it need a nickname tho?

I immediately thought of “Millie” as others mentioned, which I generally think would be cute but it reminds me of that chick who vomits paint for a living. Ick
