AB Bride :  so, it’s not that she logs on as him. It’s that she sees his account as one of her own when she signs on, just as I see my joint account with my husband as one of my own and so does he.

eta: I was also surprised to hear about this.. I’m Canadian, too. But I wrote it off as an American thing.

Ugh, this is despicable. You might be better off asking them about an item they want or starting an education fund in their name instead of giving cash.

When my children were too young to appreciate monetary gifts, I started savings accounts for them and deposited the money. Even now when I tell them that they are purchasing something and need to spend their own money (because it makes them think harder about how much they really want something), I secretly deposit the amount they give me back into their bank accounts. Now that they are older and make their own deposits, they are always shocked at how much money they have and wonder where it all came from. I tell them that the $10 her and $20 there from birthday cards adds up! But I cannot imagine robbing the next generation of anything. Education is expensive, and these parents are poor examples.

Gift cards to a kids store or take them on a “shopping” spree yourself. That really blows that the parents would take that money that she earned.

I like the idea of a shopping trip or a physical gift(s). I only concern about opening up a bank account is that the parents will try to find a way to access it (especially if the children are under 18 and play the minor card).

amanda1988 :  My parents online banking wasn’t connected to my account.  Maybe things have changed or different banks, different policies?

I think it’s at least looking into.  Either a joint account or youth accounts (and then other relatives could do transfers directly to it as well).
