We received a VERY nice baby gift from DH’s friend and his wife. It had a few outfits, blanket, and something that Darling Husband and I can’t quite figure out….
It’s a circular silver charm, about the size and shape of a silver dollar, but much thinner. The front is engraved with the full name of our son, and the back is engraved with his birth weight and date. There is a very small hole at the top, but too small to put a nice chain through. It’s also really too big to wear as any kind of practical jewelry.
We’re Jewish, so we know it’s not a Christmas ornament. If it’s meat to be some kind of keepsake, we’re really not sure what to do with it…
It’s literally just a round, silver charm. We cannot figure out any kind of practical purpose for it. We’ve shown it to several people over to visit and no one can figure out what it’s for. We feel bad asking them what it is, because they seemed really excited to give it to us.
Does anyone have any ideas??

@ExcitedScaredBee: Post it with the name blurred.

Is it like this?
You might just need to add the little circle attachment to add it to a chain.

Hmm. I have no idea!
My best guess would be to stick it in the baby book or hang it on the wall in a frame!

@j_jaye: Just FYI, those circle attachments are commonly called jump rings.

@Hyperventilate: Well that is my learn something new everyday thing. Thanks

Yes, post a picture if you can! I am so curious now. Sounds like it may be “something” as they would have had to go through the trouble of ordering and personalizing it.

Could it be a crib medal? Not really sure what they are or what they’re for, but I’ve heard of them and it would give you something to google. Alternately, could it be a Christmasornament and they just weren’t thinking about the fact that you’re Jewish?

Attached is a picture.
I don’t think it’s a necklace, only because I have talked in length with the wife about our jewelry (the same jeweler made our engagement and wedding rings as well as custom pieces that we wear), so she would know that this is not something that I would ever wear….
@nonimouse12: I’ll look this up! They’re actually muslim, so I highly doubt they would get us a christmas ornament.

@ExcitedScaredBee: my baby book has a charm similar to that with a ribbon through it attached to the inner cover…but that’s something random that my mom did. I don’t know if it’a common!

Looks to me like the necklace a PP posted. It needs a little loop and then you can put the necklace through. Having the extra loop is what keeps the charm laying flat

I’m going to guess necklace charm. Also, I looked up crib metal (out of curiosity) and it seems unlikely to me, as most of those appear to be Christian or Catholic, which would be a weird gift from a Muslim couple to a Jewish couple.

What an interesting question; I really have no idea of the original meaning but placing it in a baby book makes sense.

Got it: dog tag in case the baby gets lost 😀
I think it could be very lovely with a nice ribbon looped through it and framed in the baby’s room.
How about an open square frame with no glass and no back (so you can see both sides), either hung on the wall or placed on a dresser?
I think PP might be right – I’ve never heard of it before, but a brief search seems to indicate that it’s a crib medal. Kind of a cute concept what they did here – not religious but very personal.
