Hey bees… just wondering, has anyone else had a casual wedding/reception and not gotten a DJ but just hooked their ipod into a dock and let that serenade your party? That is what we are planning, and just wondering if anyone has any feedback or tips from their experiences… We aren’t hiring anyone for the music, but I am having apprehension about just letting things play out. Tips?

I had a friend who did this and it was great! I don’t necessarily have any specific tips for you, but I can say that as a guest it was awesome because their playlist was so personalized with their favorite songs. They didn’t run into any technical difficulties or sound issues or anything. If we were having dancing I would do the same in a heartbeat. Go for it–get yourself some nice speakers you’ll be able to use afterwards in your home!

We’re going the iPod route for our wedding – just becuase we have really specific taste in music. and don’t want any cheesy tunes 🙂 My cousin has kindly offered to “man” the ipod when people start dancing. She’s a budding DJ, and I’m so thrilled that she’s getting involved. Of course, we’ll create the playlist, but she’ll keep an eye on the guests and what they’re in the mood for.
We’ll be preparing a number of playlists beforehand – one for drinks/pre-dinner, another for while we’re eating, and a third for when the party really gets going.
I think going with the iPod option takes quite a bit of preparation. And there’s always the chance that the music won’t quite fit the mood as it “evolves”.
But hopefully with my cousin’s help, we’ll be able to create the right vibe.
Perhaps what you could do is assign this job to a few of your friends?

It looks like we might have to do this and I am super apprehensive. So I’d love to see what others say. I saw a few of the articles on OBB but I am so bad at making playlists so I’m really not sure about it. 🙁

@Mrs Christopher: I can relate! But I feel like I am just a worrier, and I am probably worrying unnecessarily because our reception is a bbq, and music is definitely important but it’s not going to make or break our little party.
You should check out some of those links above, good tips!

i’m considering this as well! i think if you have enough time to research the songs and look at boards and sites for playlist ideas, youll be fine! and itll save u so much money

Honestly, I kind of wish I had done this! I am really passionate about music that I love, and have a good track record of putting stuff together for parties. Our DJ was not expensive, but…he didn’t really do anything that I couldn’t do. And some of my favorite songs were not played. 🙁
