petsandplanes:  What about relatives (either your relatives or your significant other’s relatives)? I think it’s a nice gesture to your family and his.

Does your SO have any girlfriends who he is close to?

Are you sure you want bridesmaids? Nobody has to have bridesmaids either.

Do what makes you happy above all.

Hope it all works out, Bee.

What about family? I don’t have a frien up there, just my family members. SIL’s, a cousin and an aunt.

I second what pp has said! I am having my sister as my Maid/Matron of Honor and two brothers as my bridesbros, so don’t discount family just because they may be males. I also think a bridal party isn’t necessary, especially for older couples. It’s a lot sweeter to see just the couple at the alter instead of 10 college buddies on either side of them.

We didn’t have a bridal party and loved it!  Have you thought about just skipping the bridal party altogether?

petsandplanes:  we had a small destination wedding for the same reason and it turned out cheaper for our guests and cheaper for us (and way less stressful!). My Mother-In-Law held my flowers during the ring ceremony and Father-In-Law gave the rings to the minister so he called up my in laws for the rings and they loved being part of the ceremony. Both my parents walked me down the aisle so my stepmom could straighten my dress at the end of the walk.

Glad I could help!  And if all else fails, I’ll be a bridesmaid :).

petsandplanes:  My wedding party was my sister, my ex-sister-in-law, and my brother’s girlfriend (soon to be wife, they’re getting married in October).  I didn’t have any close female friends, so I went the family route instead.

Also, have you ASKED your friends with kids? Just be up front with them that you’d love to have them in your party, but completely understand if that’s too challenging logistically for them.  They might surprise you!

petsandplanes:  What if your kids with friends could be the ring-bearer or flower-girl? I think this might be a very sweet idea!
