We are paying for the wedding ourselves, and will have a dress rehearsal the day before the wedding (so we can get stress free pictures). We were considering having a rehearsal lunch (or early dinner) at Souplantation (a salad buffet restaurant where you pay as you come in rather than after your meal) so that we wouldn’t have to worry about the issue of who pays for the meal.
Does this sound realistic, okay? Or would this not work?

So would it be made clear to the guests before the rehearsal dinner that it’s a pay-your-own-way?

Are you saying that you will expect your wedding party and families to pay for their rehearsal dinner (or late lunch)?
If so, I could not support such a choice. If you can’t afford a restaurant rehearsal meal, either don’t have one or have a simple meal that you can afford.

The purpose of the rehersal dinner is to thank your guests/attendants for taking time out of their busy schedules to rehearse for your special occassion.
It is not really an expression of gratitude to make them pay their own way.
If you cannot afford dinner out, invite people back to someone’s house and make a huge pot of spaghetti and garlic bread for under a dollar a person.

@andielovesj: I agree with this. And it’s not just because I love spaghetti, even though that does sound delicious.
