- Wedding: August 2015 - Suncor Fluvarium
AFter 6 long years of waiting, of having our venue booked, of bugging him with rings, I FINALLY have my ring!
We are living away from home on contract work and since being here, I have been pretty lonely and bored. We agreed before we left that we would start planning our wedding while we were getting on our feet here in the cold north. We knew that if we waited until we were officially engaged and home this coming summer, we would have to wait another 2 years+ to get a venue/photog/decorator/etc. We decided on a venue, and booked and deposited it on December 23, less them 24 hours after getting home for Christmas break.
Fast forward: Christmas comes and goes. I told him I didn’t want a Christmas engagement, and he listened. I don’t play games, but, I was kind of hoping he would surprise me. Boxing day sales on December 27th. We shop and I drag him around looking at rings. He keeps saying he will get one in the new year. He asks me to go for a coffee that evening (the place we had our first date), but, my sister calls and asks me to go shopping. I go shopping, and he hangs out with his parents.
New Years Eve, we are travelling back to our parent’s home after being snowed in while travelling. He asks if I want to go for a coffee (once again, WTH is up with the coffee? Go get your own coffee!!), but, I didn’t sleep the evening before as I had a terrible cold. I go nap… for 3 hours… and of course, being NYE, everything is closed early. Oh well. He could have went for the coffee himself. No big deal.
I get up and showered and we have dinner. We get ready and go to his childhood friends house for a New Years Party. I am not even thinking that anything is up. Around 11:30, we go to the kitchen and get a glass of champagne, and I dig into some finger foods. At 11:40, he asks me to go upstairs, he needs to tell me something. I don’t think anything of it, it was loud downstairs at the party. We get to the top of the stairs, and he starts looking kind of strange and his hand is in his pocket. My mouth is still full of food, and he starts off by saying that he knows 2013 was a terrible year for me (lay offs, sickness, death, moving, not a good year!), but, he hopes that this will make the rest of 2013 better, and 2014 so much more enjoyable. He gets down on one knee (at this point, I am choking on food, and crying, and nodding my head, and pulling him up to hug him), and passes me the most beautiful ring. He told me that he has attempted TWICE to propose at the place we had our first date, but, I shopped and napped through both! I am sort of glad that things worked out the way they did. We had privacy, and got to immediately share it with our loved ones. It was a hell of a way to ring a new year!
We stay there for a few minutes and kiss and mush, and I walk down the stairs all teary eyed, and holding my hand. My good friend (and Bridesmaid) is terrified that something terrible happened and I showed her the ring. Everyone was elated, and I’ve been walking around with hearts in my eyes ever since.
I was surprised, although I knew it was coming. He kept telling me in the new year, when we get on our feet. He had bought the ring in November, and had it shipped to his parents.
I am so happy that I am OFFICIALLY going to be marrying the man of my dreams. He is so sweet, supportive, funny, grounded, and I can’t believe I am this lucky!
Onwards through the fog (and snow!) to the planning!!
