Yes, this is normal.  Unless you are having your wedding @ the hotel, most will not allow you to take any photographs outside of your rooms.  Luckily my hotel is near the beach so I was able to use the local park to take my bridals and First Look.

Unfortunately, I’m not familiar w/ Chicago so I don’t have any suggestions.

I don’t have any suggestions, but this same thing happened to my cousin. I guess it’s the hotel’s way of encouraging you to pay them to have your wedding there, too. Sorry about the disappointment!

Oops, I forgot to ask the hotel. Didn’t even occur to me to do this. I took pictures at the hotel with my bridal party, parents and siblings 🙂

@kalenka: I would not suggest that at all. Im a wedding photographer and was informed by a hotel that one of my bride’s was getting ready at with her girls that no pics were allowed in the hotel lobby as well. If I had gone against this rule they would have had me escorted out of the hotel and not welcomed back. Considering I had booked a room at this hotel, I didnt want to go against that. The bride wasnt aware of this so when she found out we had to really get creative with portraits taken in the hotel rooms only, luckily the hotel was gorgeous and no worries! Most hotels require you to pay a session fee if you are not holding your wedding at their hotel for the entire day.

@kalenka: Ack! Sorry to learn of this inconvenience but its a good thing you found out early enough to change your plans. I hope you soon find a place that will allow photos. Good luck!
