I’ve been married before and struggled with the same thing.  In the end, we ended up with practicality over etiquette (which I wasn’t particularly happy with)….we registered.

Just for some simple things – new towels, sheets, etc.  Things you can always use a refresher of.  People kept asking where we were registered, so we just did it to appease.

I think you should have a small registry. I am doing something similar. Our ceremony only has 14 guests and then we’re following it up this summer in my home country with a larger party. I did a small registry with a china set, towels, some kitchen appliances and tools.

Even if you register for a few small things, it can be a real favor to your guests to be able to get a sense of what you like, and to have the option to choose a gift they know you want.
