We requested to try the food before booking and they said that it wasn’t customary for them to do so. We worked out a plan that we would have the tasting and it would be $50 per person, if we booked the cost would be deducted from our bill and if not then it was just like going out for dinner.

Seemed like a fair deal to us! Try to work something like that out

I talked to 4 caterers and did a tasting with the leader of the 4.  The tasting was free AND we got to keep the leftovers (which were enough to feed my folks later that night!).  I personally couldn’t imagine booking a caterer (or food inclusive venue) without tasting their food.  I can get them wanting to charge to taste, but to not offer?  In my humble opinion, that’s not acceptable.

Around here it’s almost always come to our tasting once every six months.

I am DYING to know where you ended up booking. PM me if you don’t want to announce it here.

@HaveGroomWillTravel: I’m more concerned about why they skipped over your question. Did they just forget about it or what? I would at least ask them again and get a firm answer before you book. There have been a lot of scams lately with catering in my area… so I would be leary of someone who refused to answer my question. It could be that they just forgot about what you asked (went on to the next thing). Even if they don’t let you taste before you book… I would wait until you get an answer either way. That’s the fair thing to do IMO!

Our venue had no taste test. I asked about it and got a frank, “we don’t do that.” However, I had eaten at our venue before as my friend had her reception there a year and a half earlier so I knew the food was to die for. Sorry I can’t be more helpful, just thought I’d offer an experience of someone who went through the same thing!
